Excel IF Function Practice
The IF function lets a formula make a choice. You give it a test, a result for when the test is true and a result for when it is not, and Excel decides for you. It is the building block behind bonus rules, free-shipping thresholds, pass marks and data checks.
These exercises take you from one comparison to rules that combine several conditions: AND when every condition must hold, OR when one is enough, IFS when there are several tiers, and ISNUMBER or ISBLANK when the question is whether a cell holds usable data. Every exercise also tests your formula on hidden data, so a formula that only works for today's numbers does not pass.
What these functions are for
- Label a result with words: Pass or Retry, Bonus or No bonus.
- Apply a threshold: free shipping from a minimum order, a review above a limit.
- Combine conditions with AND (all must be true) or OR (at least one must be true).
- Pick a tier from a table of limits, such as a discount that grows with order size.
- Check data before you calculate with it: is this cell empty, is it really a number?
Tips before you start
- Say the rule out loud first. 'And' or 'both' means AND; 'or' or 'either' means OR.
- Check the boundary: does exactly 60 qualify? That decides between > and >=.
- Text results go in double quotation marks and must match the wording exactly.
- For several tiers, test the strictest one first, or use IFS with TRUE as the final catch-all.
Practice exercises, in a sensible order
Has the Sales Target Been Met?
Make a formula choose between two results depending on whether a condition is true, using a comparison and cell references.
Free Shipping and Review Flags with AND and OR
Test two conditions in one IF, and decide whether both must be true (AND) or at least one must be true (OR).
Volume Discount Tiers with IFS
Choose between several results with IFS, order the tests correctly, and handle values that sit exactly on a boundary.
Flag Bad Data with ISBLANK and ISNUMBER
Use ISBLANK and ISNUMBER inside nested IF functions to classify data, and count the rows that do not pass.
